Foods of Bali

Foods of Bali

Bali is one of those places where you can eat really well at almost any budget. On the same day, you can grab a simple meal at a warung, then end the night at a beautiful restaurant that looks “special occasion” but costs less than you’d expect.

Here are the food moments I still think about.

Warungs: the meals I’d happily repeat

Warungs (small local eateries) were the most consistently satisfying part of eating in Bali. No fuss, quick service, and food that tastes like it belongs there.

If you want the “Bali food” version of travel advice, it’s this: don’t overthink it. Find a busy-looking spot, order something popular, and you’ll usually do well.

Fine dining is surprisingly accessible

What surprised me most is how often a nice restaurant meal felt like a good deal. The service tends to be thoughtful, the plating is intentional, and you can tell many places take desserts seriously.

Not every “pretty plate” is memorable, but the overall baseline is high, and it’s fun to mix these meals into a trip without feeling like you’re blowing the budget.

The yogurt bowl + smoothie combo

This became my default: a yogurt bowl and a mango smoothie when I wanted something light, fresh, and easy. It’s not “traditional Balinese food,” but it was consistently good and a perfect remote-work meal.

Bali is a melting pot (in a good way)

Some of the better restaurants leaned into global influences (seafood, ceviche-style dishes, steak, and other familiar formats) without feeling out of place. It’s a nice option when you want a break from rice-and-noodles days without resorting to something bland.

One quick “what I’d skip next time”

Not every meal hit. The main pattern I noticed is that some fried chicken/duck spots came out dry and forgettable.

Also: Chicken-holic was a miss for me. I’m sure someone loves it, but it’s not where I’d spend another meal in Bali.

Takeaway

The best part of eating in Bali wasn’t one single dish: it was how easy it was to bounce between simple local food and “treat yourself” meals. If you go, try both. A couple warung lunches plus a great dessert somewhere nice is a perfect Bali food day.
