Singapore takes food seriously, and it shows. Over 11 days, I ate my way through hawker centres and neighborhood spots, and every meal felt like a small window into the city’s mix of cultures.

Here are three of the standout dishes (and where I tried them).

Laksa

Laksa was one of the highlights of the trip. I had mine at the Maxwell Food Centre, and it delivered exactly what you hope for: a rich, creamy broth with seafood flavor, spice, and coconut all working together.

What I loved most was the balance. It was bold without being overpowering, and it didn’t taste like it was leaning on “extra salty” to get there.

BBQ

I also had a great BBQ meal at BBQ Box (Geylang). What surprised me was the format: we didn’t grill the food ourselves. Everything came out already cooked, and the tabletop grill was there to keep it warm.

It made the whole meal feel more relaxed: no rushing, no overthinking timing, just good food staying hot while you work your way through it.

Duck and Rice

Duck rice is a classic for a reason. It looks simple, but when it’s done well the duck is tender and flavorful, and the richness from the skin and fat makes every bite feel satisfying.

The rice keeps things grounded, and it’s often served with a bowl of soup: an underrated part of the meal that makes it feel complete.

More Singapore food

Looking back, what made Singapore special wasn’t just that the food was good: it’s that great food is everywhere, and it’s woven into everyday life. If you go, start with a hawker centre, follow the lines, and try a few staples. You’ll eat well.
